Overall, this is a very new bill (introduced hours ago) and it seems very narrowly tailored to silencers and therefore not consequential to anything else, except maybe DOJ operations (and that part could be amended so as not to curb active DOJ cases).

I'd be a bit worried that this bill might impede already-active DOJ investigations or evidence in criminal cases, but if that doesn't happen then I don't really have any worries about it.

On the second point, I'm not sure why the DOJ would need to destroy such records (maybe they could just edit them?), but that sort of clause might just be a typical administrative action so I'm not sure how to feel about it. I'm pretty neutral on the first and third points, and I don't really see how changing the classification of a silencer really affects gun ownership or the gun control debate. I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. I’m all for them having the same buying process as a rifle, but having them be an NFA item doesn’t make sense to me. Suppressors only lower rifles to hearing safe levels (they’re still loud just not permanent hearing damage loud) and have the potential to prevent a lot of hearing damage for hunters especially youth hunters. I’m not looking to get into a gun control debate, but I’m genuinely curious why there’s pushback against these bills. Currently it can take over a year to get a suppressor and owning one has lots of technicalities while also being quite expensive.
